The Forge Alternative

Comments on Microsoft aside, apologies for the delay between posts.

On top of other unrelated blog issues (net quotas and ISPs); I was also delayed due to making Lite Loader talk properly with Optifine on my laptop machine, strange since the desktop I have made a jar from with the same install process in a previous blog entry worked without any issue. :S

Rather than cheat and use the same compiled jar file from my desktop machine; I turned my attention to giving Forge a try in hopes of getting it all to talk to each other properly for the benefit of any blog readers that may have struggled with similar issues.

The result is that Forge became a working alternative; so I've included the brief install instructions for it as an alternative process if people have issues with the previous setup.

Forge, Optifine and Voxel Map setup instructions:
  1. Make a fresh copy of Minecraft 1.7.10 jar and run this to ensure it is functional. Accessing the menu screen is needed for stuff the program generates behind the scenes, close Minecraft when this is done.
  2. Download and install Forge for 1.7.10 and run this to ensure it is functional; details here.
  3. When forge is installed, grab Optifine jar file.
  4. Grab Lite Loader installer.
  5. Generate a jar file via the Lite Loader installer, (selecting that option over the default install routine).
Note: This is the file you want for the later steps.
  6. Grab a copy of the Voxel Map .lite file.
  7. Copy those 3 files into the mods folder. Those files being:
    • Optifine jar file,
    • Smaller generated liteloader jar file (not the large installer file) and,
    • the Voxel Map .lite file.
Note: You can find the Minecraft install path for most Windows users with: %APPDATA%\.minecraft
  8. Run Minecraft Launcher then start game with the Forge profile selected.

Result:
You should be greeted with the Optifine settings in the Video Options, the Lite Loader tab on the top-right of screen, Forge install version info on the bottom left of the main menu and Voxel Map mod installed inside the Lite Loader tab. Upon starting a world map the introductory message for using Voxel Map should also appear with the handy mini map on the top right of screen by default.

Completing all of that also allows the more adventurous among you can also try your hand at forge mod development via the comprehensive tutorials; starting here.

Work is progressing steadily on my next blog posts; apologies for the delays and I hope to post more regularly, and with the more fun stuff of actually playing the game at last, in future.

Happy mining,
