On Microsoft

A brief blog post about my views on the acquisition of Mojang.

A busy week on the net with the recent purchase of Mojang by Microsoft causing much concern about the future of Minecraft. My opinion on the matter is to wait and see what Microsoft bring to the table, aside from 2.5 billion worth of US fiat currency.

Ultimately; the worse case scenario I can dream up is Minecraft basically has 1.8 as its final official version. Even if authentication servers are disabled; I could still see some servers in operation via disabling the requirement of users having legit premium accounts (since there would be no way to authenticate accounts in this scenario) that would keep Minecraft as an operational pastime on the web.

Development wise; pending the DMCA issues around Bukkit atm (a non legalese post about the matter here ), this will go forward with Tekkit and similar spin off products continuing to grow and mature. Plus whatever mod packs people also dream up which will keep the Minecraft experience fresh and interesting for those not into the vanilla experience.

Outside of Minecraft, there is always projects like Starmade or other Voxel engines that may arise to fill the massive void left by Minecraft.

On the future of this blog; I will still continue it with around the same enthusiasm I have for Minecraft since I started playing this game (later than many others I admit). While steadily working on this blog, I'll wait and see with cautious optimism what Mojang does with the greater risk profile that comes with the backing of Microsoft.
