I know at the end of my last blog entry I promised to get away from cacti farms, however toying around with world edit (when not on the MinecraftCC server) on that VoxelModPack I introduced last time naturally saw me keen on tinkering with cacti some more.

Well here are the results.
A single level of hoppers feeds 3 item silos (chests+hoppers). Production is generated from 4 rows of cacti @ 8 blocks per row, repeated vertically from block level 5 up to 255.
I used a zig-zag pattern to repeat the farm layers upwards to fit in a total of 83 levels of cacti being automatically farmed.
Total producing cacti is (4 x 8 = 32, 32*83 -> ) 2656 cacti blocks.
Just sticking to 1 layer of hoppers at the bottom of the farm reduced lag considerably to a point where I am certain most systems capable of running MC should be able to use this farm. Testing was done in 1.7.10 however I hear version 1.8 is more efficient in performance. Save file is at the end of this blog entry you can use to test this initial design and/or scale it up via hand or (preferably) world edit.
It currently sits inside a footprint of around 9 by 19 blocks (10 x 20 when adding a glass/solid block case to stop blocks overshooting hoppers) for both farming area and item silos, however by overlapping the outer row of hoppers you can scale this farm out to however a large size you want.
Just be sure to leave a single row of hoppers if you intend to connect it all to 1 single end chest from which to teleport/warp at and grab cacti when needed.

I found using world edit to rotate the farm didn't work with the hoppers correctly, however it being a single layer of hoppers at the bottom of the farm means setting this up is a minimal bit of additional work for those looking to scale up the farm. Something to keep an eye on if your using world edits rotate function.
Tip: Proof check your work when copying hoppers in World Edit.
Possible to be the case that my design can be scaled to the point of being the largest Minecraft cacti farm possible, since most farms I've seen use water for harvesting (takes up much more space vertically when scaled out horizontally) and none have used the cross hashing pattern of farming cells (3 blocks being 1 each of glowstone, sand, cacti block) I share with you here.
Trying to compress the farm any further yielded me poor results, as moving the base glowstone block on each cell (again 1 block each of glowstone, sand and cacti) diagonally blocks generated cacti entity blocks from reaching the hoppers at the bottom of the farm for harvesting. As such, I believe I have achieved maximum compression though I do welcome other ideas and suggestions you may have in the comments section below.
